Make Your New Year’s Resolution Today
by Rochelle Griffin
Starting next week comes the eight-week, rapid succession of celebrations, parties, festivities, & holidays. If we aren’t careful, this period will also come marked with an average ten-pound weight gain, the need to buy bigger clothes, and a slew of New Year’s resolutions that will often be discarded before the end of January. Are you going to play victim, knowing what the past years’ holidays have done for your waistline OR are you going to take control now and put a plan in place? Personally, I’m voting for the latter. Being pro-active puts you in the driver seat of that broom or sleigh. 😉
Let’s look at 6 easy tips to prevent holiday weight gain… in fact, print these out. Put them on your fridge as a constant reminder. Oh, and #6 is my favorite.
1. Give the sweets away.
After Halloween, have your kids pick out a few of their favorite candies then get the rest out of the house! The same goes with the yummy sweets often bestowed on us over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Give them to a local church, school, or nursing home. Share! You will make someone else’s day or even their entire holiday.
2. Stay focused on your end goal: no weight gain.
Don’t worry if you don’t LOSE weight. Let’s simply stay focused on not gaining. This will take a lot of pressure off of you. Grab a pair of your jeans and keep them out in your bedroom. Try them on every few days as a reminder.
3. Increase your exercise a bit more than normal to help offset additional calories you may consume.
Do this on the days that you have the parties to attend. Workout as you normally would, but then add a little extra. Perhaps an additional 30 min walk or one of the Ten Minute Trainer workouts. If you don’t already exercise, you may want to simply skip down to #6 now.
4. Cut back on other meals, using Shakeology specifically as a meal replacement, on the day leading up to the event and the day after.
Do you realize that the average Thanksgiving dinner is over 7,000 calories PER PERSON!?!?!?! Now I’m not telling you to not enjoy the meal with your loved ones because I plan to enjoy every morsel. I’m simply saying to make some concessions leading up to the event.
5. Keep a food journal.
Don’t be an ostrich…errr…well a reindeer with your head in the snow. Especially during the holiday season, when your goal is to not gain any weight, it’s imperative that you realistically know what passes your lips. Often our journal will make us aware and reveal to us what we aren’t seeing.
6. Join my 6-Week Holiday Slim Down Group.
This is my favorite tip. Don’t let the name deceive you. It’s not about slimming down…although that may be your personal goal and it can most definitely happen. It’s more about not fattening up. Studies have shown that people who have a support system while working out are more apt to be successful. I’m specifically running this special group from November 19 to December 28…over the 2 holidays that tend to be the most difficult for people from a food perspective. Thanksgiving & Christmas are considered “open days,” so you can still fully enjoy the meals. This group is aimed at beginners…regardless of your current fitness level or weight.
Seeeeeeeee, I’m all about enjoying the holidays. I’m definitely going to enjoy mine. You don’t need to look at the season as “all or nothing.” It’s all about choices. Chances are that, when it comes to these upcoming months, you don’t typically think about yourself…you are focused on others…rightly so. Make this year, however, the season that you give yourself the gift of health. Don’t let January come when you look into the mirror and realize that you’ve done it to yourself…again…ten extra pounds. NOW is the time to make your resolution. Not January 1.
Don’t hesitate. Join my Holiday Group today!
