I love visiting family. In fact, we’ve been up here in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for almost 10 days doing just that. My dad is turning 70 in a few days and TODAY is my grandma’s 86th birthday! The other night we took my dad out to an amazing 5-star steak restaurant. At the end of the meal, we all shared a big piece of the most divine carrot cake EVER. I mean…think of your favorite cake and then think of that cake on steroids. THAT good! Anyways I posted about it on my Facebook page. Someone commented that they didn’t think the cake was worth it because of the extra exercise it would take to work it off.
I have to tell you…I don’t agree at all. Life is about choices. Yes, we want to be healthy, but we want to also feel comfortable in celebrating Life with our loved ones. I don’t regret eating carrot cake at all…not for a second. I’d totally do it again too.
My goal with my articles, my Facebook posts, my tweets, my groups…with everything…is to show people how to be healthy AND live fulfilling lives. I don’t want to perpetuate any thinking that you must have an “all or nothing” view of your health and fitness. Quite honestly, if you do, you’ve become a slave to your workouts. Not good. I don’t want to be a slave. I don’t want you to be one either.
If you workout and eat healthy on a regular basis…5-6 days per week, it is absolutely ok to enjoy yourself on date night with your spouse or celebrating a special occasion with your family. I give you permission to do so! Life is meant to be enjoyed, people.
If you have been a slave to your health and fitness, I want to encourage you to take a closer look at why. Do you have a fear that if you relax, you will lose control? Are you addicted to your scale? I honestly don’t know your situation but with a little digging, you could discover the issue and free yourself. For example, if you fear losing control, enjoy a meal or dessert away from your house and don’t bring home a doggie bag. The next day, workout and eat well as usual. By the way, occasionally bumping up your calories like this will boost your metabolism! Or if you are a slave to your scale, ask someone in your house to hide it and bring it out weekly. I actually had to do this when I fell into the pattern of weighing daily.
We each only have so long on this earth. We have limited days to spend with our loved ones. Yes, we absolutely want to extend that time by taking care of our bodies through health and fitness, but we also want to enjoy and celebrate special occasions without guilt.
Moderation is the key. Being excessive in any area of our lives isn’t useful. In the words of my eleven-year-old, “too much of anything can be bad”…whether exercise or carrot cake.
P.S. I’d love to have you join our Facebook community if you haven’t yet. You never know what interesting topic is going to pop up over there.
