Is Skinny-Chic Still “In”?
by Rochelle Griffin
Do you work out? If so, why? Seriously.
Is it because you want to lose weight and fit into your skinny jeans from 5 or 10 years ago?
Is it because you want to feel and look like a million bucks in that outfit when you go to the party next Friday night?
Is it because you want to get off of your high blood pressure medication?
Or is it because you are trying to live up to an ideal thrust on you by society?
We know the risk factors that are associated with obesity: high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease leading to stroke or heart attack, Type 2 Diabetes, joint issues, the list goes on and on. If we are working out to improve our health and reduce the risk factors, it’s the right reason. On the hand, if we are being held hostage by a societal ideal, we need to take a closer look at what is going on in our lives.
It wasn’t long ago that the heroin skinny-chic look was considered beautiful in magazines and in Hollywood. I’ve always fought against that image and made sure to teach my clients the same. First not only was it not healthy, much of what we saw was a photoshopped representation of the person. I promised my husband, in fact, that I would never lose my curves. He loves them as much as I do.
Imagine my delighted surprise today when I was scanning news on the Internet and came across this article on FoxNews.com: Fashion Magazines Now Airbrushing Models to Make Them Look…Fatter? What!?!??! Have we actually turned a corner in our society? Have J-Lo, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian returned to us what was once the ideal body type in the 1940 & 50s? Hallelujah! This is realistic.
I get that you want to look good in your clothes. I do too. I also understand what the fashion magazines have done to us. I’ve had to fight my own inner demons when comparing myself to what I was seeing month after month in magazines, even though I knew it wasn’t accurate.
Here’s the thing…I don’t care if you weigh 90 lbs or 400lbs. What is important to me is that you are healthy. Health will help ensure us longevity. Longevity gives us time to complete our purpose on earth, raise our families, LIVE. Now let’s talk truth…chances are that if you are 5’5” and weigh either 90 or 400 lbs, you aren’t healthy.
