Are Looks More Important than Your Health?
by Rochelle Griffin
***Warning…this article may make some people angry or upset. However, I’m writing from my heart, saying something that needs to be said.
You may not know this about me, but besides being a RN and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I’m also a Beachbody coach. Now no worries…I’m not about to try to sell you on a product. I’m telling you because you need that piece of information.
This past weekend was the annual Beachbody Coach Summit in Vegas, where 10,000 fitness fanatics (ie coaches) descended. I’ve attended the past 4 years. This year, however, we made a conscious choice to skip the event because Vegas is just not our thing. Our motto is Family first, and we had no intention of bringing our son to “sin city.”
So I had the luxury of keeping up with the amazing announcements this year on Facebook from the comfort of my own home, while our son played in the other room with his friends.
I must say that I really enjoyed watching all the pictures of the festivities until I started seeing pictures of some people that I know…and I was suddenly saddened & appalled.
I literally had to do a double take. These people were so thin that they actually looked sickly, frail, & malnourished. I called my hubby in the room to give me his opinion. He thought the same thing. Ok…so it’s not in my head.
Here’s the part that may make some angry as I’m letting the cat out of the bag:
There’s an unspoken truth about these types of events…many people are known to do crazy things to their body to either keep up with or look good for “The Jones.”
Please know that there is NO judgment from me. In the past, I WAS one of those people. Two years ago, at Summit, I was proudly at my high school weight…smaller than I was on my wedding day. No one asked how I did it (or if I did it safely.) They just commented how good I looked, and I smiled with pride. After all, I had to walk across the stage in front of thousands of my peers.
However, I’m about to tell you how I did it (and although other coaches may have not done the exact same thing, many have done things along these lines. Promise I didn’t create these ideas out of thin air.) Note: I am NOT condoning the following types of behavior or routine!
I worked out twice a day, 45-60 min each, which was extremely difficult when running a successful business and homeschooling a child. I found the extra time by sleeping less. I was exhausted but determined to stay the course. I had a goal to meet.
Plus I had crazy eating rituals…like the 3 weeks where I only ate chicken, tilapia, brown rice, and green beans…breakfast, lunch, & dinner. Then I stopped eating almost all carbs for a few weeks. Hey you do what you have to do to fit in that dress…and it DID work.
Little did I know, however, the damage that I was doing internally to my body. In fact, I wouldn’t find out for another year when my body finally crashed and I HAD to pay attention.
By the time my body finally said NO MORE, I was in a Stage 3 adrenal fatigue, the worst stage possible. I had also developed leaky gut and created many food sensitivities, including…are you ready???…chicken, tilapia, brown rice, and green beans. Yea, not a big shocker there.
I get that people want to look good, but looking good cannot trump our health. When we allow it to, it will become a downward spiral that may not become apparent for months or even years…but mark my words, it WILL become apparent at some point.
So, friend, please put blinders on, don’t care so much about what other people think, don’t allow your health to take a backseat to fitting into those jeans or dress, stop trying to impress “The Jones.” I can tell you first hand that it’s just not worth it.
