The Journey of Wearing a Mask
by Rochelle Griffin
Do you ever feel like you’re wearing a mask…hiding your true self from people? Social media provides the perfect forum for people to become something other than themselves.
We see it every day. People hid behind profiles and become very verbose or opinionated…spewing anger or hatred. Or on the flip side, we see “perfect” people smiling, dressed to the 9’s, with no evidence of having problems. Where does the truth lie on who people are? It’s probably somewhere in the middle.
People often ask me if I’m the same in person as I am on social media. There was a time that I would have had to confess No. There was a time where I wore a mask to be like everyone else. There was a time where I was a chameleon depending on who I was in the presence of at the moment. There was a time where I wasn’t confident in myself.
It wasn’t just on social media either. I would change depending on the group I was with. Family, friends, business associates, strangers…I wore a different mask for everyone.
Only God and my husband knew the true me, however in the midst of wearing my many masks, I actually lost myself…forgetting who I really was at the very core. Talk about frightening. I felt fractured.
This went on for many years until I couldn’t take it anymore. It was so stressful to maintain a “persona.” I had to rid myself of the masks and just be myself, regardless of what others thought. After all, isn’t that ultimately why we wear masks…we are concerned about what others think of us?
And I’ll be honest, some “friends” turned their back. It’s ok. I don’t hold a grudge nor am I bitter. Some people are meant to only be in your life for a season.
I learned to accept God’s truth about me vs. my distorted perception of what truth was. God’s truth says I’m included, loved, peaceful, calm, secure, content, joyful, enough, important, treasured, and understood. My distorted perception was the exact opposite…its no wonder I wanted to hide behind masks.
So the person you see on social media IS who I am in “real life” as well. Yes I post motivational and inspirational quotes to help people in their daily journey. In fact people often comment that they feel like I’m in their head. What they don’t realize is that many times my posts are what I’m saying to myself to help me get through the day. Yep, I need the motivation and inspiration as well. I’m human…I have rough days…shoot I have rough weeks.
I’m probably more transparent than people realize. Today I’m willing to let it all hang out…the good, the bad, the ugly. I’ve dealt with many challenges…many I’ve talked about before including infertility, infidelity, financial ruin to name a few…and I’m always willing to share how I made it over each hurdle. I’m not ashamed of what I’ve been through…even though my life is littered with mistakes. I firmly believe that what I’ve dealt with can help others.
Likewise YOU have a story. You’ve made mistakes. You’ve overcome difficulties. Don’t hide behind a mask of perfection, in person or on social media. Be who God designed you to be. Any missteps that you freely talk about can help prevent someone else from making the same errors. You may change the course of someone’s life without even realizing it. That’s powerful!
Friend, it’s time to take your mask off and be free!
