Social Media: The Key to Giving Hope
by Rochelle Griffin
It’s been an interesting morning so far. I heard from many people on my Facebook page who said that they were inspired by the words I wrote AND I heard from someone who told me she’s fed up with my “religious” words. Both scenarios honestly made me smile and really brought home the fact that social media gives us each the unique ability to reach thousands and thousands of people.
Do I write to be controversial? To offend? Of course not.
Do I write what is laid on my heart? Am I true to who I am? Absolutely.
We live in a world today that is so full of angst…from the implosion of our nuclear families to global economic issues. Everywhere we turn, we see people hurting…out of work…unsure of the future.
If I can use social media to bring a glimmer of hope in the brief moment that someone reads something I post on Facebook, tweet on Twitter, or send out in an email, it makes everything that I do worth it. It makes any negative replies aimed at me ok.
Likewise social media can be misused. As I scroll through my newsfeed, I may find it laced with profanity, inappropriate pictures, and ugly words towards others. I don’t think people understand how powerful words can be. We have all heard “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Sorry…it’s a big, fat lie. Words absolutely can hurt people.
Through social media, every single one of us…every single person reading this (and I mean YOU) has the ability to bring light into the world. It’s my wish that people will understand how profoundly they could impact someone who they have never met…who possibly lives on the other side of the world…with what they write.
Look, I’m a regular girl…with hopes, dreams, fears, and a family. I never asked to be placed in a position of influence. Once I answered God’s call on my life, it simply happened and I obeyed. Social media has given me a platform to reach people I could have never reached otherwise.
So will I apologize if my words on social media ruffle someone’s feathers? Truthfully, no…as it’s never my intent to cause discourse. I cannot control what someone may or may not read into what I write. I also can’t control who sees my writings.
I will say this…I write exactly what I mean. It’s my style. So there’s never any reason to read “between the lines” of anything I post or email.
I want to challenge you as well today. If you want to see a revival in your life, in your community, in your country, in the world, start with what you say…what you put out there in social media. Be a positive role model for people. It’s the old adage “you reap what you sow.” If you put hope out into the world, hope is exactly what you’ll receive back…the hope for a better tomorrow for yourself and your family.
