Home Business Time Management: 3 Important Tips
By Rochelle Griffin
Let’s lay out the scenario: You’ve made the decision that it’s time to start a home business and become an entrepreneur. You no longer want to “work for the man” but have a vision of a legacy that you can build and give to your family. You’ve done your due diligence and have chosen a business model that fits your personality and have found a mentor to help guide you.
Now it’s time to get busy and start to build the business, but…
Dinner needs to be made.
Little Johnny needs to be taken to baseball.
The baby is crying.
Laundry needs to be folded and put away.
Lunches need to be packed for tomorrow.
(Insert anything else that needs to be done around your house.)
It can make you second-guess your decision to start a new business, but I’m here to tell you that if you implement a few basic strategies, you’ll be able to manage your home and your start-up.
Ultimately it comes down to time management, which is a subject that not many people like and quite frankly, many of us stink at. If you can get a handle on it, however, you will be able to prosper.
I’m going to give you my 3 top home business time management tips that truly changed everything for me when I started to implement them.
One of the most important aspects to running your home AND your business is the to-do list. Whether you like to use the old-fashioned paper list or the electronic kind, it doesn’t matter provided that you actually use it. I’ve utilized both and one of the best discoveries I’ve made this year is an app called Remember the Milk. I have it on both my smartphone and computer, and they sync. When something that needs to be done pops in my head, I immediately add it to RTM.
Also, when you have a home business, it’s important that you set aside “work hours” even if you are only doing it on the very part-time basis of an hour per day. Negotiate time with your spouse, your older children, whomever you need to so that you can have uninterrupted time to get through the work “to-dos.” You’ll be amazed how much you can achieve with an hour of FOCUSED time vs. 3 hours of attempting to multi-task everything. When you are working, work. When it’s time to be a parent or a spouse, be present!
Lastly, have designated space to work on your business. This can be an office, a corner of the kitchen table, or even just a box. A box?? Yes, if you are pressed for space, keep all of your work items in a box that you can pull out when you are ready for your focused time. Running all over the house attempting to find what you need will eat up your designated time and frustrate you. I know because I’ve done it.
A great book with even more tips is called Eat That Frog: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy.
I have to be honest…running a home business as a wife and mother is a challenge. I’d be misleading you if I said otherwise. I can also honestly tell you that running a home business is one of the most rewarding ventures I’ve ever done because it has allotted me freedom to be a wife and mother whenever I want to be…without having to ask permission from my boss.
Whether your goal is to eventually fire your boss or simply have a part-time business to make money for the family vacation, these 3 tips alone will help prevent you from pulling your hair out. Start to implement them today, and I’d love to hear how they work for you. ☺
