There’s a Fungus Among Us: Candida
by Rochelle Griffin
Do you struggle with bread or sugar cravings? Have you ever wondered WHY you can’t give them up…even though you’ve tried multiple times?
You know the battle well. You have the best intentions, telling yourself that you WON’T give in this time. Then the next thing you know, you’re reaching for the breadbasket or are standing at the dessert table. At this point, it’s over. The bread and sugar have won.
If you find yourself in the throw of these cravings, there’s actually a very good chance that it has nothing to do with willpower! Here’s where you can breath a sigh of relief…no it’s not in your head. It may be the result of a Candida (yeast) overgrowth.
We all have Candida. When it’s in the correct proportion with the other microorganisms in our body, life is good. The issue is when an unhealthy imbalance occurs in our gut. The healthy bacteria in our GI tract keeps Candida in check, but when we have gut dysfunction, Candida takes advantage of the situation. This is happening in approximately 70% of people (and many don’t even realize it!) The imbalance of Candida overgrowth then leads to symptoms, including carb and sugar cravings.
So WHY does it cause these cravings? Because sugar is its main source of food! Yep! It can make your brain think that your body needs more sugar.
Carb and sugar cravings are only one symptom of a Candida overgrowth. Other symptoms include:
- Brain fog
- Trouble concentrating
- Mood swings
These are only a few symptoms, but you get the idea…having a Candida overgrowth is no fun. It’s also not difficult to acquire. If you’ve ever been on antibiotics, have a stressful lifestyle, are dealing with adrenal fatigue, have poor sleep habits, have ever taken cortisone, or eat a diet high in carbs/sugars, there’s a good chance that you’re dealing with a Candida overgrowth.
So how do you find out if you have an overgrowth? This is something that I help my clients deal with on a daily basis though the use of both saliva & stool testing.
Once we know if Candida is an issue, we jump into action. We have to kill off the Candida with both diet and supplements, heal the gut (remember gut dysfunction is why this overgrowth occurs in the first place,) restore the balance of healthy GI bacteria, and deal with the underlying reason why gut dysfunction even occurred.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel but you have to deal with the situation head on. You can’t wish, hope, or use positive inspiration/motivation to get rid of Candida. It takes purposeful action.
If you believe that you may be dealing with Candida, schedule a consultation for an in-depth assessment of your situation. I have limited spots available for July and August. Schedule now at http://www.rochellegriffin.com/fdn
