Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, & Santa…oh my!
by Rochelle Griffin
Two weeks ago, my 11-yr old, Jacob, discovered “who” was actually Santa. It was totally by accident. I was in the kitchen with my hubby, Keith, talking. Jacob was in the other room. Keith says something about the Easter Bunny being a made-up character like Santa and the others. I immediately shushed him and gave him “the look.” I told him that although Jacob DID know about the Easter Bunny & Tooth Fairy, he still believed in Santa…until that moment. Within a few seconds, I hear Jacob yell out from the other room “What do you mean that Santa’s made up?!?!?!” Of course…the kid who I can stand directly in front of, telling him to brush his teeth and he doesn’t hear me, somehow hears THIS from a room over. I look at Keith and we come totally clean with Jacob.
A few days later, Jacob brings the subject up again. I told him that now that he knows the truth, he has the ability to make a grown-up choice. I had his attention. I talked to him about The Angel Tree. I explained its purpose: to give to children who won’t have the same kind of Christmas as he will because of financial issues the parents are having. I told him that if he wanted, he could choose to receive less this year and instead, choose a child from the Angel Tree to bless. He immediately said yes.
Last Friday, I took Jacob to the mall. When we were at the Angel Tree, I could see his heart hurting as he looked at the names and ages of the children. He decided to choose not one, but two children to help…a one-year old & a ten-year old. We had the list and set out to find the toys and clothes on their wish list. My child, who HATES shopping for clothes, was patient and picked out everything himself. He kept telling me how good he felt.
Once we had everything, we headed back to the Angel Tree and saw the local news standing there. They asked if they could interview us after hearing why we chose to give. Jacob, always the ham, was in heaven. Give him a platform and that boy will preach! I was so proud of him.

As we were leaving, I saw a Fox headline come across my phone about a school shooting. Of course I didn’t realize how devastating the news would be until we got home. What started as such an amazing day turned so bittersweet. My heart broke. We made the decision to further give to those affected by the Sandy Hooks shooting.
I don’t write today to gloat or brag about what we’ve done. This isn’t a “look at us” moment. Instead it’s about helping others as so many are hurting. We used to be one of the families hurting financially as well. We’ve been there. I can honestly say that making the decision to become a coach changed everything for me, for us…and now we are paying it forward.
