Change IS Good
By Rochelle Griffin
As a creature of habit, change is hard for me. Even though I’ve become better at handling change over the years, I would be lying if I said that it doesn’t sometimes broadside me and require me to step back and regroup. I’ve learned that change is actually good (even if I do kick and scream)…and it’s good in ALL areas of our life, including our health & fitness.
- Are you bored with what you are eating every day?
- Have you stopped seeing progress in your fitness?
- Does the thought of doing “another” workout make you want to scream?
If you answered “YES” to any of the questions, you may have put all of your eggs in one basket…aka…have fallen into a rut. It’s actually super easy to fall into a food or exercise rut, and when this happens, we will stop seeing the changes that we are striving for and become frustrated.
Unfortunately, as a result, the majority of us adopt the “all or nothing” mentality and simply give up. I mean if we aren’t seeing changes, why should we continue to push ourselves so hard?
Well, my friend, I’m here to say NO, don’t stop! As easy as it is to fall into a rut, it’s just as easy to get out of it without sacrificing all of the hard work that you’ve already done. Stay committed, as the answer is probably even easier than you think!
If you are in a food rut:
- Grab a new magazine such a Clean Eating
- Dust off some old cookbooks
- Remember that Google is your friend for new ideas
- …so is Pinterest!
- Be sure to look through my Daily Dish recipes
- Go to a new restaurant
- Buy some different fruits & veggies that you haven’t tried before
If you are in a fitness rut:
- Is cardio your thing? Well, the first thing that I’m going to say is that you need to add in strength training 3x/week if you haven’t already. The muscle that you’ll add will boost your metabolism and give you a great shape. If you already lift weights, then change up your cardio. Go for a jog if you always do aerobics in the gym. Try your hand at boxing. Go play soccer with the family (and play to win!) Get on a bike.
- Is strength-training your love? I find that I have a more difficult time convincing this particular group that they need to add in cardio. Short answer is that you do. Speaking as a registered nurse and from a cardiovascular perspective, it’s really important that we do cardio 4-5x/week to maintain and improve our lung and heart strength.
As you can see, it really IS easy to get out of a rut. The problem is that it’s more mental than physical. Next time that you feel stuck, don’t think about it. Instead take one of my suggestions and just DO it. Action alone will get you out of the pit and have you moving in the right direction once again.
