A Balanced Life: Fact or Fiction
by Rochelle Griffin
We often hear people say “I’m trying have a balanced life” or “My life is out of balance.” I used to fall into that category as well. I was always striving for this elusive “balance” that people talk about. Continually seeking it actually became a source of stress for me because I always felt as though I was a failure at it…
…until I realize that “balance” is a façade.
Yep, there’s no such thing as a balanced life, so take that pressure off of yourself right now. I wish that someone would have told me that.
In any given moment, our focus is on one area of our life. It may be business, a job, the children, or the chores. Regardless, when you are focusing on one area, you have to give a bit in the other areas. Then you regroup as needed…and this may happen several times per day.
As a work-at-home mom, it’s really easy for me to lose track of time in my life. In fact, it’s a constant struggle and readjustment. Because my work is on MY time, I can work whenever…but it’s a double-edged sword. No one is standing over me telling that I MUST do something. Therefore, I have to continually stay conscious of my use of time. My son’s activities and medical appointments are priority and scheduled. Everything else is around that schedule.
To help me stay focused, I have a calendar to keep track of my business, my child, and my commitments. It’s with me everywhere. I also make a monthly goal list…further break it down into weekly goals to meet the monthly goals…and I further break down the weekly goals into daily to-dos. I’d be lost otherwise. This system has allowed me to accomplish GREAT goals!
I’ve also discovered that I can’t do it all. It was an illusion that I could. I’ve learned to have others help me as I become busier. What are you worth? What is your time worth? I hired someone to help with the housework and laundry…freeing me up to spend those hours instead on my business and with my family. Perfect and well-worth trade off. My husband has taken over the cooking & assists with our company. He’s a MAJOR help with our son and an awesome father.
So, I end with this. EVERYONE struggles for balance…even those who seem to have it. It’s a constant tightrope act. The more that you are aware of your time, however, the easier it becomes to manage. Even those who have fallen off the tightrope can find their own version of balance once again.
