The Art of Resistance Can Be Messy
by Rochelle Griffin
Don’t rock the boat. Don’t make waves. Don’t ruffle feathers. Don’t go against the grain. Don’t stand out. Don’t go against the status quo. What word do these statements all have in common?
The word “DON’T”…but more importantly, if you look deeper than the actual words themselves, all of the statements represent RESISTANCE! One definition of resistance is coming against an opposing force. Resistance rears its ugly head in many ways in our lives. It can show up in our personal life, our profession life, even in our fitness journey. It’s up to each of us, individually, to decide whether to accept it or push back.
I, for one, am a rebel at heart and have learned to trust my instincts even when I am met with a wall of a resistance. There was a time in my life where, at the slight push back, I would have caved because I was afraid of what people would think. No more…and as a result, my life feels extremely free. When I make decisions that are in line with my values, ethics, and vision, I’m good. It’s ok if others aren’t in agreement because guess what… there will always be someone who doesn’t agree.
I’m incredibly proud to say that we are raising our son to follow in his mommy’s footsteps. Just the other day, my husband, Keith and son, Jacob took my car into the Toyota dealership for maintenance. My son brought worms (yes worms), paper, tape, markers, and a piece of wood. Keith had no clue what Jacob was up to. On his own, Jacob branded his worms “Tank Worms,” made a sign up, and waltzed into the Toyota dealer ready to sell his worms to the sales people and customers. Hello!
Did he meet resistance? Yep, he did…and he didn’t let it stop him. I cracked up to learn that he made $8 and quite a stir on his entrepreneurial venture. My boy was NOT afraid to go against the norm. He had a vision, and he was going to see it through. He was also told that he has a job at Toyota once he turns 18. Ha!
When is the last time you were a rebel, doing what you knew…in your gut…was right? When is the last time that you were flying in a flock of geese and veered onto a different course…causing all the other geese to just look at you?
Often one of the biggest areas of our life where we experience resistance is in our health and fitness. Unfortunately it happens all the time. Friends, family, even sometimes perfect strangers try to thwart our journey. It’s often unintentional, but if you aren’t aware of it, you can easily fall into the trap. The looks that your parents may give you…the pushing of food on you at a friend’s party…the cookies that your partner makes and tempts you with…(fill in your own story here.)
This is why it is SO important to have a support group like my Power Starters group around you. You must fly with geese going in the same direction that you are going. If you aren’t sure how to get started, no worries…I’m here to help. Go to my Getting Started page for the 3 easy steps.
So go ahead…ROCK the boat, MAKE waves, RUFFLE feathers, GO against the grain, STAND out, and GO against the status quo! I dare you. Will it be uncomfortable? Absolutely…but on the other side of resistance is greatness!
