5 Red Flags Diets Fail
by Rochelle Griffin
Diet is a word that is intimately known by many. Think about it…how many diets have you been in your life? I can count at least 10 different ones that I’ve tried since I was a teenager. We go on the merry-go-round of diets because we are hoping that the “next” one will have lasting results. There are 5 red flags that the diet you are currently on is going to fail. If you see one of these flags in your current regime, RETREAT!
Red Flag #1. You are removing a specific food group.
There isn’t one specific food group that is “bad” regardless of what the media may say. Our body needs protein, carbohydrate, and fat to function in the most effective, efficient manner. We want our body to perform at optimal level so we have the energy to get through the day of work, carpools, cleaning, and anything else on our to-do list. Food, in its natural form, is meant for us to consume. It’s when food is taken from the natural to the unnatural, processed form that it’s not healthy.
Can we lose weight by removing a specific food group? Short answer is yes. It won’t work in the long run however. Eventually our body will rebel and you’ll run into red flag #2, deprivation.
Red Flag #2. You are feeling deprived.
This is a dangerous flag. The main problem with “diets” is that they restrict you in some fashion when you follow the rules that they prescribe. If you feel deprived, you’ll find yourself in bondage and want to break free…if not right away, over time. As a result, you’ll overcompensate in calories, perhaps in times of stress. This is a big factor in binge eating.
Red Flag #3. You are constantly hungry.
When you aim to lose weight, it is normal to have some periods where you feel hungry. After all, you are reducing the caloric intake that you are used to having. This hunger can actually be your body telling you that you are dehydrated and need water OR it may be psychological hunger.
There is a fundamental problem, however, when you are consistently hungry and unsatisfied. Your “diet” is failing you because the calories are too low. This can reek havoc on your metabolism.
Red Flag #4. You have to take specific supplements to be successful.
Ahhhhhh…one of my favorite topics: supplements. In today’s world of GMO (genetically modified) food, truthfully it is almost impossible to get everything that our body needs without some supplements. I am not against supplements at all. In fact, I use Shakeology every single day as insurance that my body is happy.
I’m speaking about diets that say you MUST take a specific supplement (typically one that they sell) in order to see success. Be weary of these types of claims. What happens if you choose to stop the supplement?
Red Flag #5. You don’t exercise.
Yes, I’ve saved the best for last for this is my pet peeve. I am not going to name names because we ALL know different diet programs that tote the latest shake or foods that you can lose weight on. Problem is that they leave out a very important part of the equation…fitness! While yes, people absolutely have lost weight on these various programs, statistics show that “nearly 65 percent of dieters return to their pre-dieting weight within three years, according to Gary Foster, Ph.D., clinical director of the Weight and Eating Disorders Program at the University of Pennsylvania.”
Folks, you must exercise if you want long-term, healthy, lasting results. There isn’t an easy way out of it. This red flag is one of the main reasons that people fail in their weight loss attempts.
In short, you want results that will be sustainable for life. Yo-yo dieting is not something that people strive to do, but millions get caught in the cycle. There is a huge difference between being on a diet and having a diet that promotes health. You want to strive for the latter. If you are in the midst of a weight loss journey or about to embark on one, check it against the red flags. If you see red, wave the white flag…fast!
