The Secret to Success
by Rochelle Griffin
I am asked all the time what it takes to be successful…in business…in health…in weight loss…in life. Success is actually extremely simple, however it isn’t easy.
To be successful, you simply need to find someone who’s already successful in the same area and find out what activities he or she does day in and day out. Then you need to do them daily as well, being willing to course-correct as needed. Add in a liberal dose of patience and voila! Seriously, that’s it in a nutshell.
And you thought there was some big secret you were being left out of. Honestly there’s not.
The issue, however, is that not everyone is willing to pay the price for long-term success, opting instead for immediate, short-lived gratification. Of course they still want to enjoy the long-term rewards but life doesn’t work that way.
Let’s take business for example. I mentor people every day, showing them how to build a successful business as I have. I lay out the steps. I share my exact daily activities. I put it all out there in an easy-to-follow manner.
Now remember, I said success is simple, not easy. You can follow all my steps, but you WILL hit bumps in the road. Goodness, I still hit bumps in the road! So when things get tough in business…and again they will, refuse to back down (ie forgo the excuses in a futile attempt to protect your ego and feel better about the situation.) No. Dig deep and have the tenacity to push forward…not letting life beat you down.
Refuse to look for the short-term gratification…the “make a quick buck” for something in the now. Going the short-term route is basically attempting to build a foundation on quicksand. The foundation WILL eventually sink and swallow everything up with it. Mark my words.
Build something lasting instead. Be willing to put the sweat equity into your business. You will be paid back by the ten-fold. Personally I’m building a legacy, and I don’t care how long it takes. Seven years, ten years, twenty-five years…I don’t care (that, my friends, is called tenacity.) If, God forbid, something happened to me, I feel secure in knowing my family will be taken care of financially. The comfort that brings is indescribable.
So now let’s take a weight loss example in regards to success. Hitting the dreaded plateau is inevitable and can be incredibly frustrating. I personally know this all too well. If you haven’t experienced one yet, you will at some point.
So you have 2 choices:
1) The short-term gratification route, which is looking for a quick fix. It may be in the form of a pill, a wrap, a calorie restrictive diet, you name it. Or you may quit altogether. Regardless, it won’t be a long-term solution and can be detrimental to your health.
2) Or you can take a step back, evaluate why the plateau is occurring and course-correct, keeping your eye on the long-term prize: excellent health!
In short, don’t fall into the “grass is always greener on the other side” trap. I’ve seen way too many people do it, only to find that the grass may be green at first, but then it turns brown. Ultimately it’s not about the grass. It’s about the person and you simply can’t outrun yourself.
